This self-taught architect born in Osaka, Japan, used to have a boxing career but after being struck by the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Imperial Hotel on a trip to Tokyo, decided to take drawing and interior design courses, Ando’s architectural style is said to create a “haiku” effect, emphasizing nothingness and empty space to represent the beauty of simplicity
