We also wish we had multiple hands to learn and do different things at the same time, but it is something that slips out of our hands, haha. When starting architecture school, we just want to be all over everything, learn everything fast, know everything, do everything, get into everything, but we just have to follow the process and do it step by step.

What you can do, is start practicing (if you have time) different tools you’ll need later on and that you will not be taught in school.
So to start, here is a list of architecture software you can learn when starting school.
3D Modeling

3D modeling software is a class of 3D computer graphics software used to produce 3D models.

SketchUp is a 3D modeling computer program for a broad range of drawing and design applications — including architectural, interior design, industrial and product design, landscape architecture, civil and mechanical engineering, theater, film and video game development.

Design

You can use these design software as a post-production design, to adjust and pimp out your architectural projects and have a variety of architecture representation methods.

Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor. The software has become the industry standard not only in raster graphics editing, but in digital art as a whole. Here at Show It Better, we love this program for post-editing all of our architecture projects.

InDesign

Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing and page layout designing software application. It can be used to create works such as posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, presentations, books and presentation boards.

Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor and design program. Used as part of a design workflow, Illustrator allows for the creation of everything from single design elements to entire compositions. Designers, architects use Illustrator to create posters, symbols, logos, patterns, icons, illustrations, floorplans, presentation boards, etc.

BIM

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the foundation of digital transformation in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.  It’s based around models used for the planning, design, construction, and management of building and infrastructure projects

Revit

Autodesk Revit is a building information modelling software for architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, designers and contractors.

AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design and drafting software application.  It allows you to draw and edit digital 2D and 3D designs more quickly and easily than you could by hand.

Video
After Effects

Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production process of film making, video games and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing, and animation.

Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro is a timeline-based video editing software application developed by Adobe Inc. It helps you create timeline video fast, perfect for architecture online presentations.

These are some software that you can learn when you start studying architecture and that will for sure make your student life easier, and not only that, but it will catch your teacher and classmates’ eyes. If you want to start, head over to our Youtube channel to see some of our tutorials.

As a student, which software are you currently learning?
